Some 200,000 youth, ages 16 to 24, are injured each year on the job and 77,000 of them require hospitalization or emergency room treatment, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety.
In an effort to make the workplace safer, Lowe’s Companies, Inc., in conjunction with SkillsUSA, is sponsoring a 10-hour online Safety Awareness course for construction trade students across the U.S., including those at the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton. Students who complete the course receive an OSHA Safety Card.
Students at TTC-Elizabethton who have completed the course are Travis Ayers, Justin Fleenor, Cody Segrest and Gary Stines, all in Diesel Powered Equipment; David Arnold, James Earl Brank, Larry Bryant, Earl Hardin, William Johnson, Alan Keesecker and Clarence Painter, all in Electricity-Electronics; Irby Blevins, Mark Carter, Dexter Goddard, Donnie Grant, Randy Harless, Jeffrey Harrison, Ronnie Patton and Eric Sams, all in HVAC-Refrigeration; and Gregory Wright, who is studying Welding.
Course topics include preventing falls, personal protective equipment, bloodborne pathogens, electrical safety, machine guarding, hazard communication, ergonomics, preventing workplace violence and emergency action.
