Richard Woodward, instructor of computer information technology at the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton, gives Madison Earp, senior at Happy Valley High School, access to the pilot training program.

Juniors and seniors in high schools in Elizabethton and Carter County will be one step closer to entering the 12-month practical nursing training program at the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton when they complete an online training class in December.

Those who complete "Dosage Calculations for Nurses" will receive academic credit in high school and at TTC-Elizabethton when they complete admission requirements to the nursing program, according to Terri Blevins, director of the Practical Nursing Program.

The online Dual Credit Training Program is a pilot project sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Education and the Tennessee Board of Regents through its Regents Online Degree Program. "It is the first online, dual credit course in practical nursing training offered in the state of Tennessee," Blevins said.

Patricia Roark, RN, director of the Technology Foundation Lab at TTC-Elizabethton, is the online instructor. The course, which takes 36 clock hours to complete, includes math skills review, drugs and solutions and measurement of systems. "The lesson, exercise, module reviews and other interactive resources make the class fun, attractive and an effective learning environment," Roark said.

Richard Woodward, instructor of computer information technology at TTC-Elizabethton, is serving as the project webmaster. "The purpose of the pilot project is to assist lottery eligible high school juniors and seniors enroll in online dual credit courses," Woodward said.

Orientation was held Aug. 24 and online classes began Sept. 1. The course ends Dec. 16 and grades will be posted Dec. 21. A final grade of 81 is required to pass the online course.
