Three students at the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton won gold medals while competing in a statewide SkillsUSA event in Chattanooga on April 26th and will compete in the finals in Kansas City, MO, in June.
Kimberly Ann Hanley of Elizabethton won first place in Technical Computer Applications, Steve Leonard of Bristol, TN won the gold in Computer Maintenance Technology, and Andrew Barber, an Air Force veteran from Elizabethton, placed first in Heating and Air Conditioning. Sam Potter of Roan Mountain placed second in Welding during the competition.
SkillsUSA is a national organization that serves trade, industrial, technical and health occupations students in public high schools, career and technical centers and two-year colleges. The organization has more that 280,000 members representing all 50 states plus Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The state winners will spend five nights in Kansas City, where awards will be presented to the winners on Friday, June 23. Thousands of dollars in prizes plus scholarships will be presented. This is the first year that TTC-Elizabethton was chosen to compete in the competition.
