High School Counselors Tour TTC-Elizabethton
John Lee, instructor of Diesel Powered Equipment Technology at the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton, explains the curriculum of the 20-month training program to high school counselors from Carter, Sullivan and Washington Counties who discussed dual enrollment opportunities and toured training facilities at TTC-Elizabethton on Nov. 30.
Dean Blevins, director of the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton, is exploring opportunities for high school students in the region to receive dual credit for completing training courses offered by TTC-Elizabethton.
“TTC-Elizabethton is affordable. It has small classes that meet 30 hours each week, Monday-Friday, with highly-individualized instruction. Training programs provide intense, hands-on, competency-based and self-paced training. TTC-Elizabethton has a 72 percent student completion rate, and 90 percent job placement rate,” Blevins said.
Meeting with representatives from Sullivan County Schools recently, Blevins said dual enrollment opportunities exist with online courses in Dosage Calculation for Nurses, Nursing Trends & Issues, Medical Terminology, Business Systems Technology, Drafting and Computer-Aided Design, Computer Information, and Dietary Manager, as well as Certified Nurse Assistant, an on-ground course to be offered after regular school hours at a location to be determined.
Blevins said a new hybrid course in Applied Technology covering Electricity, Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Fluids, topics suggested by local business and industry, will soon be offered by TTC-Elizabethton. The course has 16 instructional areas that will be taught over a period of 15 weeks, Blevins said.
“High school students recommended by the Career Technical Education Director with their respective school system must complete an Admissions Application to enroll at TTC-Elizabethton. Course work must be completed during the next term, Jan. 3- April 20, 2011. We desire high school students who are self-disciplined and self-motivated, with no attendance or disciplinary issues,” Blevins said.
