SkillsUSA National Silver Medalist
Kathy Woodby, a student in the Practical Nursing program at the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton, received a Silver Medal at the SKillsUSA National Competition awards ceremony held in Kansas City, Mo., on June 24, 2011.
Woodby scored a second place finish in Health Occupations Professional Portfolio. The competition evaluates the ability of students to present themselves to a prospective employer utilizing effective communication skills. The contest consists of a portfolio notebook and a live presentation by the contestant.
During Woodby’s five minute speech to a panel of judges, she referenced her resume and career objectives, school transcript, letters of recommendation, awards and recognition, and patient care plans, as well as community service, such as Relay for Life, Operation Christmas Child and March of Dimes.
Woodby, and Adam Vest, a welding student at TTC-Elizabethton, both from Carter County, represented the State of Tennessee in SkillsUSA National Competition after receiving Gold Medals for a first place finish in their respective divisions in SkillsUSA State Competition held in Chattanooga, Tenn., recently.
At the SkillsUSA national event, more than 5,000 career and technical education students from throughout the U.S. compete in 96 occupational and leadership skill areas. This was the first time students from TTC-Elizabethton advanced to SkillsUSA National Competition.
